THE STORY BEHIND OWL LOVE YOU

I drew the original OWL LOVE YOU while I was in prison.

At the time, I didn’t know if I would survive my sentence. I didn’t know if my mom or my father would survive it either—or if I would ever get the chance to see either one of them again.

That kind of fear hurts in a place words don’t reach.

Mom and I were like two peas in a pod—two fiery redheads who probably sounded like we were yelling whenever we talked. We weren’t fighting. That was passion. That was love. That was just us.

She was an artist and an art teacher. She knew I loved owls, and I wanted to make something cute for her—something softer than the skulls and darker artwork I usually drew. So I put everything I couldn’t say into this little owl.

While I was away, Mom got stomach cancer. I never got to see her during my sentence. OWL LOVE YOU became more than a drawing. It carried my love to her when I couldn’t.

So this one is to send love to ya.
It’s all I could muster up.
From claw to beak, my love runs deep.
Until we meet again.

This piece is for my mom. I put it out into the world because the love behind it deserves to be here.
