THE STORY BEHIND SPACE MONKEY™

SPACE MONKEY™ started with one of my mom's favorite memories. When my parents were first married, she had a spider monkey named Sheba. Years later, she could still light up telling me stories about that monkey. I could hear them a hundred times and still enjoy watching her tell them.

I drew SPACE MONKEY™ years later, and Sheba became part of the DNA of the piece. The wide-eyed monkey, the space-trip energy and, yes, the banana all grew out of memories that stuck with me.

The banana has its own strange little chapter. When I was young, my mom worked at a nursing home in Pennsylvania and I volunteered there. One day I stepped off an elevator and found a group of residents enthusiastically asking for bananas. That image never left my head. Decades later it found its way into my artwork.

My mom eventually owned one of the first SPACE MONKEY shirts. That is what makes this design more than just a crazy monkey graphic to me. It connects my childhood, one of her favorite stories, my own imagination, and a piece of art she actually got to wear.

Mom kept smiling. And dammit, Mom got the banana.
